Do you need to use the professionals?
Home printing is fine if you either want to invest in expensive equipment costing £1000′s and I don’t mean a 20 ppm colour printer that the sales representative has told you will do the job adequately or you are happy to accept shoddy cheap looking business stationery. This will depend on your market and who you are trying to gain as a customer.
You may think that a rag and bone man wouldn’t need a decent leaflet but after having some done he noticed a 35% increase in enquiries. This is purely because people trust a more professional looking leaflet. If you do decide to invest in the equipment bear in mind you will need some software to design the logos and designs. This could run into £1000′s and this won’t make you a professional designer because you will need to learn the software and have some artistic flair in order for your documents to have a corporate feel.
Have you ever come across this poorly printed stationery and thought differently about the person or their company purely based on their business card or letterhead? A decent set of stationery will set you apart from your competitors in certain industries and this could mean the difference between success and failure. If you listed the companies you would most like to do business with they might be large corporate companies. If this is the case would you feel happy presenting them with one of your existing business cards printed on your desktop machine?
Why not have a look at the companies you are trying to sell to and mirror or improve on their business stationery. I am not saying it has to be on amazing paper or designed by a famous design house just choose somebody with experience and ask them who they have helped before and who comes back for the most printing, this is because if they are ordering lots of stationery they are probably doing well.
Your local printer can help you with this and if you find them unable to, then GO SOMEWHERE ELSE! There are many good printers out there who will be able to advise you of the best type of print and design for you, they can also try to fit within your budget to ensure you get the best you can without breaking the bank. I do appreciate that starting off can be a huge financial strain but if i you can spend a few pence more when presenting material to clients it may make all the difference.
