Picture this: You’ve really made the effort for this morning’s important meeting with a potential client you have been courting on the telephone for the last six months. Your hair is neat, your shoes polished and the suit is brand new. You walk into the reception feeling like a million pounds! You look the client in the eye, you shake his hand, he warmly greets you and asks you to take a seat. All is going well, he then hands you one of his business cards. It’s better than yours, the colour is more vibrant, the card is stiffer and the information is clear and concise. Who now has the upper hand in this meeting? Does it really make that much of a difference? Maybe not there and then in the meeting but if experts are to be believed after you have left and call him next week he will barely remember you over the other 5 people he has seen. Well, maybe, but generally she will want to see a clean-cut corporate card with no eccentricities.

What does the title on the card say about you? VP of Internal Corporate Sales (Technical Division) may mean something in your company but does it mean anything to the client you are giving it too?

What does the quality of the card say about your product? May the client be permitted to think if you spend so little on your cards what sort of money do you invest in your product or service?

In conclusion: A business card should reflect you as a person and add weight to your presentation but it should also act as your silent salesperson for the future. It should be hard-wearing, maybe laminated, and fit into a business card holder easily.
